The new ideas were good; however, the execution of the new plan was poor. Even the best planned and supported colony would have been supremely challenged under such conditions.

In the coming years, the English would use in Ireland various tricks of colonialism they had learned in Virginia; during the First Anglo-Powhatan War, however, they brought to Virginia terror tactics perfected in Ireland. The colonists return to Jamestown that evening. Smith considered everything the company wanted as a general waste of valuable time that the colonists needed to spend on producing food. Smith had been right; Newport had wasted time, and, worse, he had managed to offend Powhatan.
